Why Do I Have Cellulite Even If I’m Not Overweight?

Visible cellulite on a woman's thigh

If you’re slim, active or within a healthy weight range and still have cellulite, you’re definitely not alone.

Cellulite isn’t simply caused by having too much body fat. In fact, cellulite is extremely common in women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels.

So why does it happen?

What actually causes cellulite?

Cellulite develops from the way fat sits beneath the skin and interacts with the connective tissue underneath it.

The connective tissue forms bands that attach the skin to deeper structures. When fat cells push upwards against the skin while those bands pull downwards, it can create the familiar dimpled or uneven appearance we call cellulite.

This means you can have very little excess body fat and still have visible cellulite.

Genetics play a big role

If your mum has cellulite, there’s a good chance you may develop it too.

Genetics can influence things such as:

  • How your body stores fat
  • The structure of your connective tissue
  • Skin thickness and elasticity
  • Circulation
  • Hormonal factors

So sometimes, cellulite really is just part of how your body is built.

Hormones can also influence cellulite

Changes in hormones, particularly oestrogen, can influence circulation, fat storage and connective tissue.

This is one reason cellulite can become more noticeable as women move through different stages of life, including perimenopause and menopause.

Ageing and changes in skin

As we age, our skin naturally becomes thinner and loses some of its elasticity and collagen.

When the skin becomes less firm, underlying cellulite can become more visible — even if your weight hasn’t changed significantly.

Muscle and movement matter too

Having more muscle can sometimes make the skin appear firmer and smoother, while reduced muscle tone may make unevenness more noticeable.

But that doesn’t mean you need to exercise harder or lose weight to “fix” cellulite.

Cellulite isn’t a sign that you’re unhealthy or unfit.

So, can cellulite actually be reduced?

While there isn’t a magic treatment that permanently removes cellulite, the appearance of cellulite can be improved.

Treatments designed specifically for cellulite can target factors such as the appearance of uneven skin, circulation and the underlying tissue.

At Body Sculpt Perth, cellulite reduction is one of our areas of expertise. We take a personalised approach because not all cellulite is the same and the right treatment depends on the area and what you’re trying to improve.

Most importantly, you don’t need to be thinner to deserve to feel confident in your skin.

Cellulite is incredibly normal. But if it’s something you’d like to improve, there are options.
